ano shu

The “Ano-shu” were a group of skilled stonemasons and builders active in Japan from the medieval period through the early modern period. Originating from the Ano region in Ohmi Province (present-day Shiga Prefecture), they were renowned for their exceptional techniques in constructing stone walls. Their distinctive method, known as “Ano-zumi” or “Anō masonry,” was celebrated for its durability and aesthetic appeal.

The Ano-shu were masters in building stone walls using natural stones that were minimally processed. They skillfully fitted these stones together, creating walls that were both sturdy and visually harmonious. This technique allowed the natural shapes of the stones to be utilized effectively.

The techniques of the Ano-shu were widely utilized from the 12th to the 17th centuries, especially during the Sengoku period (Warring States period) and the Edo period. Many Daimyo (feudal lords) commissioned them for the construction of castles and other significant structures.
